14 children and their parents had much fun making haystacks at the Kids cooking class on Sunday 12 June. Haystacks are created by using corn tortilla chips (nachos) as “hay” then stacking lots of healthy foods on top. The children threw their freshly-made salsa, cashew nut cheese sauce, beans, dairy-free cheese then sprinkled lettuce after grilling the stacks to just melt the cheese. Haystacks are a tasty and adventurous way to use up left overs have the whole family join together in preparing the meal.
Our young chefs then refined their baking skills in making banana bread muffins. They learnt the purposes of the different ingredients as they mashed, shifted and stirred to produce the batter. The celebratory muffins were served with strawberries and yoghurt.
This was the final session of this season’s Kid Cooking Class series. The children’s department thanks the cooks who took time to share their skills with the kids and the parents who brought their kids and helped with the setting up. The Kids Cooking Classes will break over the summer, but keep your eyes open for when they resume in the autumn.
